Project To Invest OFS’ Savings
 In PH Rural Development Launched In Seoul

A regional project intended to facilitate the investment by overseas Filipinos in the Philippines’ rural development was launched in Seoul on May 29, with the attendance of Secretary Imelda M. Nicolas, chair of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), and a representative of the Philippine Embassy in Seoul.

Backed by the National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO) Network, ACCESS Advisory and 10 primary cooperatives in the Philippines, the Regional Programme on Remittances and Diaspora Investment for Rural Development was launched in Seoul with some 50 resident Filipinos from more than a dozen community groups in Korea in attendance at the Ramada Encore Dongdaemun Hotel.

When Rola Hallam arrived in the UK at 13 from Syria, speaking no English and knowing nothing of British culture, she felt like she’d landed on a different planet. Her gynaecologist father had accepted a job at a British hospital, and the whole family relocated, pitching head first into 1980s Cambridgeshire.

“I felt like I was wearing really weird clothes,” she remembers. “It was very white middle class.” Thrown into an English school, Rola showed her mettle: nailing her GSCEs within two years while also learning English, landing a place at medical school and becoming a consultant doctor with her beloved NHS.

Study: Mobile international remittances expected to exceed $25B by 2018

A new study from Juniper Research has found that international remittances — including airtime top-ups — via mobile phone will exceed $25 billion by 2018, up 67 percent from an estimated $15 billion in 2015, according to a press release about the report.

The research found a significant upsurge in international remittance activity in the past two years with a number of cross-border mobile remittance services being deployed. For example, PayPal-owned Xoom announced in April 2016 that it will expand its services to 13 new recipient countries.
