Haitians living abroad sent more than $1.65 billion to their homeland in 2006. These remittances sent by members of the 1.5 million-strong Haitian diaspora represent the equivalent of more than one-third of Haiti’s gross national product. Around $1.17 billion of the total was sent from the United States, which has large Haitian communities in Miami, Boston and New York.
