62% of the population of Uganda is excluded from the financial sector and the banking penetration levels in East Africa are still low.

There are only 381 branches in Uganda for a population of 32 million.

Some reasons include:

• Lack of legal documents
• Limited literacy (both basic education and financial)
• Low income levels makes people shy away from banks
• Opening an account and applying for a loan is difficult and costly for the poor and uneducated
• Urban focus of banking locations
