Background

The Somali Republic is one of the most highly remittance-dependent countries in the world. An estimated 40-60% of GDP is sent home by Somalis living abroad. Politically, the country is not under unified control with a provisional central government, the Al Shabab militia, and regional groups each asserting control over different areas.

The country is highly sensitive to famile and is currently suffering through a devastating dought.
